This co-operative of local farmers provides us with the famous Ayrshire Earlies named because they’re the first tatties to come in to season in Scotland every year – and are widely considered to be among the finest in the UK.
Potatoes grow faster in Ayrshire because the coastal land is warmed by the Gulf Stream.
The potatoes are planted in late February / March in and harvested around June.
In the early 1900s, there were over a thousand "tattie howkers” (potato harvesters to you and me) in the Girvan area alone.
